What is Dead Rising 4?
Dead Rising 4 marks the return of photojournalist Frank West in an all-new chapter of one of the most popular zombie game franchises of all time. All of the classic hallmarks of the groundbreaking series return, including a huge array of weapons and vehicles players can combine to combat the horde ranging from the practical – to the practically insane. Players will also enjoy ambitious new features including new zombie classes, EXO Suits, and 4-player co-op multiplayer. With intense action and an unmatched level of weapon and character customization, Dead Rising 4 delivers a heart-pounding experience as players explore, scavenge and fight to survive in an epic open world sandbox.
What can I say about the latest game in a series that has changed the way we look at random objects and duct-tape. Actually a whole heap of positives.
Dead Rising 4 is a zombie survival game that sees you creating weird, wonderful and wacky weapons to decimate whole hoards of the undead. Everything from a fire extinguisher to a big stuffed teddy to a katana can be combined to create surprisingly useful tools of destruction.
Now Dead Rising 4 is the eighth instalment in the Dead Rising series, released on the 6th of December 2016. The game features the return of Frank West, the protagonist of the first game and the second game’s spinoff; Dead Rising 2: Off the Record.
Dead Rising 4 returns to Willamette, the setting of the original game, during the Christmas season. The game is a sequel set sixteen years after the events of the first game, and one year after the events of Dead Rising 3, though it also acts as a soft reboot of the series.
A year after the zombie outbreak in Los Perdidos, California (Dead Rising 3), Frank West, a former photojournalist now working as a college teacher, is approached by one of his student, Vicky “Vick” Chu, who convinces him to help her investigate a military compound, situated on the outskirts of Willamette, Colorado – the site of the first zombie outbreak. Once inside, they discover that the place is being used for zombie research, but are discovered and forced to flee, with Frank labelled a fugitive after he is falsely accused of terrorism by the government. A few months later, near Christmas, Frank is found by Brad Park, an agent of the ZDC, who convinces him to help investigate a new zombie outbreak that started in Willamette during the Black Friday sales, in exchange for the means to clear his name and having exclusive rights to the story, revealing that Vick has already left for there to investigate the matter herself.
What really makes this version of Dead Rising 4 wacky is that it is set around Christmas and that’s when the outbreak happens. Now I’m trying to decide if the developers wanted to be clever and say that at Christmas we are all like zombies or they just thought “When would be the best time to release a zombie to create an apocalypse?”. I think it might have been the latter but I’m going to say it was the former and give them the benefit of the doubt.
Ultimately having the game set in a mall and the small surrounding town at Christmas is a fantastic idea. All the Christmas-themed weapons and the menu music really make you feel all warm inside until you realise that the warmth you are feeling is the zombie on the floor that you just dismembered with a flaming sword and is now burning. Oh, what a lovely time of the year.
Unlike its predecessors, Dead Rising 4 features no time limit allowing players to explore and experience the world on their own time frame (Finally!!!). It also sees the camera function from Dead Rising 2: Off the Record return and be used in some cool ways as a tool to further investigations and take selfies with the undead. Say cheese!
In previous games, there were hard mini bosses called psychopaths, for Dead Rising 4 these have been replaced with easier versions called maniacs. Personally, I liked the change as it gave the game a lot more accessibility to players who enjoyed the series but were not particularly good at defeating these mini-bosses, but if you are looking for a hard challenge these bosses will not do it for you.
Another feature that has been changed is the multiple endings for the game. As a fan of the series I am not too disappointed at this loss, as the story doesn’t have much room to have lots of endings but it is a feature that should be brought back. Even if they just add one or two different endings based on the choices that you have made, that, I think, would be perfect.
On to the carnage!
In Dead Rising 4 there are a whole city’s worth of weapons to pick-up and make. You can make over 40 different combo weapons with items from all over so you will never be without a weapon in hand. There are also multiple ways of killing zombies that include special combo moves for each individual combo weapon and sneak attacks.
The amount of zombies that you get in Dead Rising 4 is just perfect, if you have the right weapons then you can take out a whole hoard, but if you are not careful then they can easily swarm you. All of these zombies can be completely marmalised allowing you to paint entire areas completely red. Or if you have the blood and gore filter on you will have a lot of bodies and that’s it.
The graphics in Dead Rising 4 are quite good, for a console that is the price of an average gaming PC the graphics and the overall style of the game look decent.
Last, on our Dead Rising 4 Christmas list we have the online multiplayer.
The multiplayer for Dead Rising 4 is a little different to the main game as it is ultimately a co-operative objective based game mode, but oh boy what fun it is. When you create the game you choose one of 4 characters to play as. I wish they gave you the ability to make a customised character but oh well.
The different chapters of the multiplayer are set in the single-player world which can allow you to show your mates all the cool places that you found whilst exploring.
If you can I would suggest getting at least one friend and playing with them online as it is a great laugh and so much fun. I absolutely loved playing this with the other guys and I can’t wait to get back and play some more!
But to ultimately conclude, Dead Rising 4 is a fantastic game that while not being as hard or demanding as is predecessors, is still a really fun game that opens it up to new audiences and a wider player base. I look forward to seeing what the future has in store for the Dead Rising series, but for now, good luck out there surviving and kill a few zeds for me will ya.
